DIY meths cookers again (beer can cooker and other versions)

Some folk have been asking about the beer can cooker over in that video I posted on lighter-weight hunting kit.

Rather than go over that stuff again there's lots of stuff in this older thread on here
http://www.fishnhunt.co.nz/forum/YaBB.cgi?num=1370860316/121#121

Happy building - DIY winter fun (making the cookers, not emptying the cans!!)

Actually lately I have been boiling most of my Kai. Still need to simmer with the lid on though
Anyone come up with burn control yet?

You need to hold the pot up off the flame to control the simmer.  Tiring, but does work.

read it, thanks creed
can you tell me, how long it normally takes to boil say a .75 litre pot of water.

also, how does the weight of meths fuel compare with say gas, or white spirits (taking account of quantities needed for similar cooking tasks)
ie is meths lighter In total weight, overall, compared to cooking the same meals etc with white spirits or gas?

I put a bottle of meths into the freezer for a while to simulate burning in cold temps, still worked but not as efficiently.

I was boiling 500ml in about 5-6 mins

The one I had was about 10 - 12 minutes for that amount of water, and I used to put about 30 mils of meths in the burner.  Meths is a lot slower than the gas, but so much more peaceful when boiling a brew in the scrub.  You need a windscreen too, wind will drastically reduce the efficiency.

I'm sitting offshore at the moment so I can't run a test boil again but my times for that amount of water is about the same as Scoped mentions. My version is plenty hot enough for a cup of tea or for the dehy meals within 4 minutes.

Wind affects any cooker (so all benefit from a wind shield)
Temperatures/altitude are not affecting the burn rate much in my opinion and there's a real good article on these cookers on the big trail walks in the States, used at 10,000ft. (Could search that out when I get some time later on) Main point though was that these cookers are not toys! And evidenced too by some commercial versions appearing in the likes of Bivouac stores.

The weight of the can cooker itself is negligible, but yes the weight of the meths is to be considered. All cooking fuels weigh something. Meths will be comparatively more heavy than gas or white spirits because with white spirits you get your fuel pressurized so the same weight will go further. However there is no residual weight such as the empty gas can at the end of the trip . . . which cannot be very safely refilled!

For quick weekend or long weekend solo hunts I'd still take this cooker as its not so much about the weight/efficiency really. The thing takes mimimal room and it's kind of aethetically pleasing to use cos I made it myself  Smiley
(and there's not bits that can be broken that would render it useless)

For expedition trips with some mates we still use white spirits WhisperLites for main cook-ups for several hunters at once. Then when I fly camp I take the beer can.

TH, did a quick test the other night on meths cooker, 30-40 mls gave me approx. 12 mins burn time and managed to  get rolling boil 2x 500ml and 1x 500ml up to about 60-70deg.

Does help if the fuel is slightly warm prior to preheat

Built one of these the other night and now the only time the gas will be coming is multi night trips for main meals.
Love that it all fits in my mug and has made quite a space in my day bag  Cool  Bloody awesome idea.

Anybody build Tetkoba's latest version with NZ cans?  Does it work or do we have to obtain the one that he uses?

Cheers

Made my first one last week and boiled 500ml in 6 min. Stoked! Burn time of about 9 min - didn't measure the fuel but it was fak all.
