This is a thread where people can list the price that possum fur buyers are paying in your area and compare it to other areas.

In Kaitaia both Basically Bush and Dawson Furs are paying $100/Kg. That's hand plucked and machine plucked.

Can you enlighten us about new players or their time of arrival????

I've been sitting on some fur and my plot hasn't been touched for a while. Always thought the current price was a bit low..

Are you talking about new buyers? I struggle to understand how it works. The newspapers all say that China can't get enough New Zealand possum fur, but the buyers tell us that China isn't buying much at the moment. Anyone know what's going on with that?

Dawson Furs was paying $110 for hand plucked and $105 for machine plucked on Thursday, but then went to $105 for both on Friday. Got told some mumbo jumbo about China causing the prices to change, but couldn't get a clear answer how or why. We might have to wait for s55's mates to step in and save the day, or find a direct market to China ourselves.

Forum moderators / admins:

How about creating a graph of the current average market rate for down / dried and green skins? It need not involve a lot of ongoing research - enough blokes have been reporting prices on the forum to provide useful data. You might even convince the buyers to indicate their current rates.

Just sayin' ...  Smiley

I have wanted to do that in the past... but it was pretty much ignored.

I'm keen if it's okay with management but will need everyones help keeping it up to date.  This forum costs to run, but I wonder if for a small fee the buyers could let us know their current purchase price and we could update a table.

You never know. I guess the question is whether to try and produce a comparative current price index so hunters could compare, say, Dawson with BB, or to do a more anonymous average that merely indicates market-wide trends. Individual buyers may not be keen to have their rates so readily (and publicly) compared with those of competing outfits, but then again they might see it as cheap advertising ...

Nice one everybody. I am also happy to share what the current prices are in my area. If someone is getting $100 in one part of the country and someone else is getting $150 in another for example, it could be a good idea to continue this thread or another, to keep everyone up to date and potentially get something organised to get together to make a larger amount so we all get top prices. The buyers have told me that their prices will be likely to go up in the winter.

Hi Everyone

We buy fur for export and to supply other buyers.
The problem with the price at present is caused by some fur buyers selling/ offering fur at low prices overseas. 12 month ago I was receiving $20 above what we were buying fur for now I am getting $10 and running at a loss but have decided to that this loss to keep as many trapper in work as possible. Even with this strategy we have some buyers offering to sell fur overseas at less than we are paying for it so that they gain orders. They then lower the price so that they can fill that order. My advice at present is to only sell what you need to live on and hold what you can this will create a shortage and to fill orders the price will need to go up. I find it hard as my philosophy is to do the best for the trapper as I see them as the asset and not the fur. Considder Fur First is a small company that is trying to pay the top price and often we find as soon as we increase our price the others follow.

A further point that trappers need to be aware of is that the Feral Action Network runs an insurance scheme with $5 mil Public Liability and $1mil Rural Fire. It has been brought to our notice that some people are using the Deer Stalkers policy or some Hunting Club policies I would warn you to read their policy carefully as they only cover people for recreational not Commercial Possum Harvesting. to find out more about the Feral Action Network  Policy email nzferalaction@hotmail.co.nz

We buy and collect from Turangi, central North Island up to Auckland. Many trappers outside this area courier us their fur and are paid by direct credit. We do not have payment problems with our cheques! Pat & Raewin Condon  Smiley

Thanks for the info Pat55. I am surprised that you are running at a loss, I recall buyers were only paying around $80/kg, less than 10 years ago, but I understand. Great to have you. The more buyers the better for competition. What you say about buyers lowering prices to gain orders and then paying hunters less to make up those orders makes a lot of sence. They then tell the hunters that China isn't buying as much at the moment. It sounds like you have the right idea regarding your respect for the hunters. I am happy to be your rep in Northland? I could deliver to Auckland. I guarantee if you find a bargain on some traps and offer hunters a free trap with every kilo, it won't take long before everyone will be selling to you.

Good idea Paora. The rat was still alive. The bars closed up around his neck and he couldn't get his head out. Here is a picture of the rat after my dog helped him out of the trap.

Damn I was happy with 21.7 to the kg up here in the North. I got 107 the other day for hand plucked. Had to bargain hard to get it though.

I also just sold fur to Raewin last week. Was only $105/kg but hey, still ok for going bush with the kids for a bonding session.
It was easy enough to deal with Raewin, money straight away....

I heard a rumour that someone is paying $2:50 for tail skins. Does anyone know who is buying these, or if it is just a rumour? Cheers

Not too cool Dawsons. Way to go Monty. He gave a special on traps in Easter too. 5 for $30 and they were a bit better quality than the original victors that China were selling in the past. Still, be nice to see someone pay what it is actually worth one day.   Roll Eyes

I'm hearing some fairly reliable rumors that they might not buy skins at all this year. If they do it will only be late in the season and they will only want the good ones. Bit of a let down after last year. Sigh. But we'll see what happens.

I think the biggest problem is our government being misinformed by DOC's opinion that fur trappers don't have any meaningful effect as pest control. The truth is, good possum numbers are getting harder and harder to come across, even in remote fly in areas. The industry has had a huge effect over the last 8 years. Huge !

I totally agree with you Paul. Don't hold your breath if this government gets in again. They will want to lock out the hunters and drop vast amounts of 1080 in places people are already trapping, instead of encouraging the hunters by topping us up with a bounty. The government would need to spend a lot less on pest control and could have accurate feedback from giving the  hunters a log book. We are the ones who are out there and know how many pests there are in our area. Not some University graduate sitting at a DOC desk in Wellington. I am catching at least one rat in my box trap every day. Why not set us up with a few rat traps that we can set on our lines while we are possuming. Surely a rat or stoat tail is worthy of a bounty.

I have been thinking that for years, about rats. A possum line is the biggest rat attractant there is. Within a few days every trap sight has rats visiting it and a good possum line actually gets the whole food chain going. Cats and stoats come for the dead possums and to hunt the rats. 9 times out of 10 the cats you catch in a possum trap are actually there hunting the rats. You could have very good pest control outcomes with trapping only and harvest everything possible.

Keep the good operators in good country and supply them with the right equipment. Most top guys would't want a huge amount of money out of it. Just being shown a bit of respect and cooperation would go a long way. I'm sure there would be plenty of money to do a fantastic job if most of the current muck was done away with, and probably with better outcomes, and less public rebuke.

It would take a huge change in attitudes, but with the right people and a bit of lateral thinking there could be some really good solutions for everyone involved.

Yeah I think you have got it largely right.  As of now some of the major buyers are struggling to move product and at least around our way some have dropped out of the market with only BB still buying and paying around $100/kg.  there is not a lot of love lost between some of the main players and in recent times with demand dropping a bit there has been a bit of undercutting etc in the China market.

The price goes up when all the major buyers have a big contract to fill and goes down when one or more of them don't.  A lot of the time including now as I understand it there is a lot of fur being sat on hoping that a Chinese contract opens up so the companies that are still buying either have a current contract or are taking a punt.

I am sure at times they are happy to not push the price up when it suits them all but they are happy to when they really need fur.

Hi All
Sorry to say the overseas orders are in decline and some buyers are not helping. China is not ordering much fur this year: - 2 years ago NZ would have been selling about 1.5-2 tonne per week at this time of the year, this year orders are below 250 kg per week and some buyers are taking the orders at very low prices just to dispose of their fur. This does not help the industry, and unfortunately I feel that the low prices are not going to improve in the short term. We need to find more overseas markets. So if anyone knows people in Europe or the USA in the Fashion Industry tell them about Possum Fur and Skins. If they want samples I am very happy to tell you who would be the best person to contact.
Great to see Possum People take a risk and open shop in lower Queen Street Auckland. Where it is hoped that the Cruise Ships will bring in new customers. The news item on TV3 (now available through TV on Demand) is a good video to pass onto potential customers showing how good Possum Skin Products look.
Christmas is coming up - send your relatives and friends overseas a possum product. It would only take one article being seen by the right person and NZ could get an order for thousands. As an industry we need to work together and create sales to keep us all employed.
The skin market: - Feral Action Network has for the last few been trying hard to promote possum skins overseas by saying now that the rubbish skins are being plucked, there should be only First and Second grade skins available. Last year due to this promotion a buyer came to New Zealand offering good prices for good quality skins. Unfortunately he was taken directly to a skin seller, whom passed off his low grade skins as first and seconds, taking advantage of the overseas buyer’s lack of knowledge.  Some would say good on the seller getting such a good price for his rubbish but it has come back to bite us all as New Zealand possum skins are again being called the rubbish skin. Because this buyer was badly ripped off, with only a third of his purchases being useable after being tanned in China, this has done some irreparable damage to our industry. We believe this one transaction was the main reason the fur skin industry orders are in such low demand today. Feral Action Network has an independent International trained grader available for grading export skins, if required. New Zealand must provide a quality product so that overseas buyers and manufacturers can be assured of getting good value for their money.
A note on selling skins for slipe. If you are selling skins for sliping try insure they are not being dried by some unscrupulous buyer so that they are not able to dry them and try and sell them off overseas as good skins for a great profit and further destroy our markets.
The opinions and advice in this article are from Pat Condon owner operator of Considder Fur First.

What about the Russian market? I believe it is just as big as the Chinese??? With the current USA/Russia relations their trading is in decline. I know the USA trappers are hurting for it. Just a thought anyway, that there's maybe an opportunity there.
BTW, still waiting for you to come pick up some fur from over 2 months ago! Doesn't matter now tho, sold it to someone else last week!

Thanks for the info Pat. It's always good to know what's going on. Realistically how can we find overseas markets? It obviously needs some financial investment and for someone to start taking samples of the products to potential customers. Is any money being spent on promoting the fur to new markets at the moment or are we just sitting around hoping that a lump of golds going to fall from the sky?

What are BB and Dawsons doing to promote the product? Surely they've the most to gain from a thriving industry.

BB have an agent based in Blenheim. They come down to CHCH, but not very often now. Check out BB website for other agents.

Closest fur buyer now is in Timaru (Mulcahy Wool Buyers).

Interesting to note that the fur price is still low but the local buyer called me and left a message: "Have you got any fur for sale"???
The must be a shortage of fur out there. Is everybody sitting on their bags waiting to get a bit more $$$ for it?  Wink Wink

Yep, got a few kgs stashed...at $100 /kg I feel personally its not worth it, once you take your costs out it gives maybe $70 kg +/-.......

Had 1 calls from our local buyer and a cold call, but nah......

i was led to believe leg hold traps , im not a comercial possum hunter but enjoy how it gets me out there checking the pig crossings etc for my number one outdoor passion
odd coon gets fed to the hounds, and it covers gas ,rego on ute, and a few other bits and get to spend time with a mate in the process ..
shame the 1080 is taking the country over , im sure it would be hard work doing full time fur hunting , but very rewarding

I have a few Kg stashed in the shed in Foxton...I would rather bury it than make somebody else rich. I still remember when the crowd in Fielding offered me an average of $3.50 a skin for 1000 skins (all 2nds & 3rds apparently) back in the late 1980`s. The guy was so offended that i said politely " take yourself outside & have sex with yourself" ..I sent them to auction myself & got a cheque for....$16,790 after tax/costs etc..If no one sells fur to the buyers the price will go up..simple supply & demand..hold off long enough & they will demand Then you can supply at a fair price ..by my reckoning $130 a kg should give you about $25-30 an hour  Cool

I would have thought the plumetting exchange rates would have been good for our fur payouts but apparently not.

Hasn't done any thing for the price of milk solids for the farmers either.
I don't think you can expect fur buyers to put up prices for summer

Closest buyers are either the BB agent in Blenheim, or the Dawon's agent in Timaru.
