Hi Everyone

We buy fur for export and to supply other buyers.
The problem with the price at present is caused by some fur buyers selling/ offering fur at low prices overseas. 12 month ago I was receiving $20 above what we were buying fur for now I am getting $10 and running at a loss but have decided to that this loss to keep as many trapper in work as possible. Even with this strategy we have some buyers offering to sell fur overseas at less than we are paying for it so that they gain orders. They then lower the price so that they can fill that order. My advice at present is to only sell what you need to live on and hold what you can this will create a shortage and to fill orders the price will need to go up. I find it hard as my philosophy is to do the best for the trapper as I see them as the asset and not the fur. Considder Fur First is a small company that is trying to pay the top price and often we find as soon as we increase our price the others follow.

A further point that trappers need to be aware of is that the Feral Action Network runs an insurance scheme with $5 mil Public Liability and $1mil Rural Fire. It has been brought to our notice that some people are using the Deer Stalkers policy or some Hunting Club policies I would warn you to read their policy carefully as they only cover people for recreational not Commercial Possum Harvesting. to find out more about the Feral Action Network  Policy email nzferalaction@hotmail.co.nz

Considder Fur First Ph: 027 282 5307, 07-3085543 (answerph) Email: considderfurfirst@hotmail.com,  Whakatane
$105 for H/p & M/p cash if required
We buy and collect from Turangi, central North Island up to Auckland. Many trappers outside this area courier us their fur and are paid by direct credit. We do not have payment problems with our cheques! Pat & Raewin Condon  Smiley

Hi Pat, are you likely to consider having a few Sth Island agents in the future?

Thanks for the info Pat55. I am surprised that you are running at a loss, I recall buyers were only paying around $80/kg, less than 10 years ago, but I understand. Great to have you. The more buyers the better for competition. What you say about buyers lowering prices to gain orders and then paying hunters less to make up those orders makes a lot of sence. They then tell the hunters that China isn't buying as much at the moment. It sounds like you have the right idea regarding your respect for the hunters. I am happy to be your rep in Northland? I could deliver to Auckland. I guarantee if you find a bargain on some traps and offer hunters a free trap with every kilo, it won't take long before everyone will be selling to you.

Good idea Paora. The rat was still alive. The bars closed up around his neck and he couldn't get his head out. Here is a picture of the rat after my dog helped him out of the trap.
