Im more worried about where it will end, Al Morrison and this government are not drawing any sort of clear line on actually conserving the natural values of DoC administered land.

Exactly my concerns. And there is certainly no disputing the fact that DOC are 'selling' our country down the road. They, Dept of Cons, ( and the National Govt) are whoring themselves at any opportunity with little to no regard for the intrinsic, cultural or natural values these things have.
This is just another of the slippery progression down that slope.

I reckon DOC would sell the Kakapo to KFC if they could show there was commercial value in it.

Cycles in the bush. It's an interesting delima. Why shouldn't cyclists have tracks provided that they can use, trampers and hunters have 100's of huts and heaps Kms of tracks.
Cyclists a relatively news to the backcountry, but why not cater to them?

Head case is correct, cyclists can/do impact on walkers experience. I'd be pissed off a bit to.
But, I know plenty of hard core trampers that hate helicopters intruding on their experience, after slogging into the mountains on foot.
I can sympathise with that, I feel the same, a bit.
Hunters turning up in choppers, booze, deck chairs.. That's when I depart for somewhere quieter.

So where do cyclistsget catered for? New tracks? Existing tracks upgraded?
Who is to blame for 4wheelers using cycle tracks ( for hunting)?
Hunters often use 4x4s, quads etc, whenever they can. Perhaps  Sometimes pissing off others that are going by foot only.

Doc is upgrading handy tracks and huts for family type groups, spending $millions on it. And neglecting the back country huts used by trampers and hunters.

50 or more years ago, some tracks and huts didn't exist, but hunters happily enjoy them now.

$$has lots to do with it. With the full backing (and direction?) of our government.

But it's also part of a bigger picture, to get more kiwis into the back country.(and tourists) What's wrong with that? It WILL impact on us, but then again, hunters are much in the minority in most of those places.

Makes it more difficult to get away from it all, certainly does for me, but then again so do helicopters in places I have slogged into on foot.
Quit moaning Smiley

I'll moan till my rectum prolapses if I think our backcountry or our hunting/fishing is being eroded or encroached upon.

A while ago, a member of this forum introduced me to the writing of one Edward Abbey.

Heres a link to a few quotes of his and I think many are very applicable to this topic.

Dont normally go around quoting poety but I did see this from Edward Abbey.......

There are some good things to be said about walking. Not many, but some. Walking takes longer, for example, than any other known form of locomotion except crawling. Thus it stretches time and prolongs life. Life is already too short to waste on speed. I have a friend who's always in a hurry; he never gets anywhere. Walking makes the world much bigger and thus more interesting. You have time to observe the details. The utopian technologists foresee a future for us in which distance is annihilated. … To be everywhere at once is to be nowhere forever, if you ask me.”

No because it is the same brain dead stuff they have done during their corporate existence. They bleat about job losses but never understand most of them should not have been employed in the first place. The height of stupidity is the sika tracking campaign they have in the Kawekas. Then each October/November they put in the 500 to blitz every animal especially in the front country of the Park which is the most accessible to kiwi hunters. What about the drongo job position of Maori Liason officer they used to or still, have in most of their Conservancies. Why do they have seperate conservancies? Hell NZ is never more than 80 miles wide at its widest part and hello we have computers.

Cant blame National, I'm sure Labour, Greens, Winston (whats his party again) would end up selling our Conservation estate to the highest bidder to.

They say they wont, but in times of need Labour/Greens will!

Yes i will blame National - because at this point in time they are the ones selling us down the creek.
But your right - the others would do it to for a jar of Jamaican made Marmite.

As usual shanks pony, you've put up a real thought provoker.

My personal view on the back country is the blood sweat and tears are what make it worthwhile.
These future gamblers the PM wants to bring into the country is why we're building 4 lane highways in the wilderness because he needs to get them back to the casino to make money Cheesy

One little sour note from my visit in November last year. On a number of days I walked around the lakeside track along the golf course in Queenstown. There were a couple of occasions when loopies on mountain bikes just screamed past. There were a few who whistled or called a warning, but all regarded the track as a racetrack. Shocked
