Hey guys, My 11 year old son is keen to get into archery. Would be targets only. He's tried a recurve long bow at a school camp and liked it. I have no idea though if thats the way to go, or to go compound.  Any suggestions of what to look for or who to buy from? Even some articles for video links where I could research further would be appreciated. I'd probably join him and get a bow for myself too, so would look to gear up at the same time...Cheers.

At 11 whats more important than bow type I think, is getting the basics correct and creating good form.
Sit down with him and find out what he and you want to achieve. Get the best kit you can as that will aid ability to improve. Bad kit in archery means inaccuracy and you can not improve if your gear doesn't tell you you are doing things right.
Just my opinion but a compound will allow him to start hitting targets but also its easier to hit targets while creating poor form. A recurve or longbow will b harder to master at first but you do so by creating proper form. Its also a bit cheaper to get good basic kit for. Then depending on where he wants to go it can translate through to compound use really well later.
This guys videos are very good to watch and I fixed many of my own faults through his videos.

Thanks for that. Sounds sensible. I'll have a good think about how best to get him going with the emphasis on form.  Its not easy as he has some learning challenges, so it's all in the delivery when it comes to learning / receiving instruction!  I considered grabbing something from H&F, but have no clue if their product is a good fit, and can't expect them to necessarily have the knowledge to be able to advise.  Might be worth a trip to a specialist retailer?

Yep definitely go to a specialist retailer.
I would imagine something like this is what you are looking for.

Also consider joining a club near you before you do much else. they can help in gear selection and starting down the right track.

Thanks you Shanks. Thats pretty close to what I envisaged.  I'll see if there is a local club we can visit too. Cheers.
