Slowly raise the rifle,

It was just a glance or a casual look around the corner and there he was just standing there front on looking directly at me.
No time to count points, I ducked down and back sneaking as quietly as possible to where the rifle lay.Fumbling now with bullets, wheres the bloody mag.All the while not knowing if he was still there. That first glance had confirmed a top trophy no doubt adding to my nervousness. Standing there like a ghost, seemingly part of his forest domain.
Ones like this chap are few and far between, more chance getting a jar full of mist than smoking a big mature Whitetail.Twenty years or more Ive waited for this one moment.I dream of it.I long for it and now the moment is here.
Whispering a urgent ''big buck' to my partner we inched along to an opening where we could see him from.Slowly but ever so slowly peering around the last obstacle.
Hes still there and looking directly at us framed between the sparse manuka trees, time stands still.Nothing else matters my full concentration is on him.His grey coat and white markings blending him to the setting, something primal and ethereal, hunters from the dawn of time have felt the same feelings that were coursing through my veins.
Slowly inch by inch I raise the rifle. We are watching each other our eyes locked together hes so close I can see him breathing, surely he can hear my heart pounding, my breathing ragged and fast.
Now the rifle is level and I have him with in the cross hairs which weave from his forehead to his neck.
I feel the cold metal of the trigger and start to take the pressure up which will spit that little projectile on its deadly course.
My right elbow isn't comfortable and I need to move fractionally. Which in turn knocks a toothbrush out of the holder thingy and into the basin below making what seemed a hell of a noise.
Instantly he seems to raise his head and look more intently but by then I'm comfortable and as the barrel clears the window sill I hold steady and send the shot away.
Hes down,  as I exhale that amazing experience.
I always wanted to shoot a deer from inside the house and can now tick that one off.

Its the nut behind the butt, that counts.

Hiya 'Fletty'. Yep the .223 is going well and I hope the .270 is going just as well for you.
Head will go on the shed wall, Ive got a bigger one that deserves to be mounted one day.
