Fallow stags scared of Reds???
Feb 11th, 2013 at 8:19pm
Print Post
Hey guys,

Need to call on the experience of some older hands. My question is:

If a fallow stag has his territory near some reds is he likely to be scared off or driven away come April when the roar kicks off?

Also are they in hard antler this time of year?

Sorry for my lack of knowledge and thanks in advance for any help.

Cheers, Steve

about 5 yrs ago i was watching over a clearing a red stag was feeding away and a fallow buck came from nowhere and beat the crap outve it, fallow are fairly agressive fighters they kick with their front legs lot.
Poor red didnt know what to do and left in a hurry. red had cast his antlers the fallow cant have been far off droping his i dont know if it woulda been a different outcome if the red still had his rack but was an amazing thing to see.

Short answer is No. Fallow are not bothered by reds as they have small mans syndrome.

I know of a spiker that went up to a big red stag while roaring and killed it. Went up to the stag with his head down, went under the reds belly and shoved his head hard straight up, putting a spike in the red's guts. the stag then promptly went off and died.

A place i hunt used to be great for reds, but after the fallow slowly moved in the reds started actively avoiding the area because of the fallow. Watched a fallow buck chase a stag up and over into the next catchment! they are aggressive little buggers!

as said, fallow bucks are scrappy buggers. but reds and fallow roar at different times. reds early April, fallow late April in general terms. they probably wont cross paths at the height of each others roars.
torana, that would have been epic to witness!

So going on this theory, seen as you can't croak a fallow buck in, could you get it worked up enough to come in and see you by red stag roaring them when they are croaking

One of my clients had one of his elk bulls killed by a fallow spiker who had popped in from a forestry. Dirty little scrapping barstads. Taste ok other than in the rut though

a friend of mine had a fallow spiker jumping the fence into her horse riding school.  it was chasing a free feed and wasnt afraid to touch the horses up a bit either.  She was pretty worried about the horses getting fairly cut up so I rolled it one morning.  Was only about a 50kg little spiker.  Had plenty of attitude but didnt stop it making nice lasagna and curries.

you can croak fallow bucks in but unlikely to get a master buck coming in, mainly young fellas. not sure how a red roar would work but as they dont inter breed i doubt they would take any notice.

Don't overlook that a fallow buck's purpose in croaking is quite different to a Red stag. The buck is calling for does. Advertising. Whereas the Red stag's roar is total aggression.
