A chance for your say on the future for the Taupō Sports Fishery

The Department of Conservation today announced an opportunity for the community to be involved in exploring future opportunities for the Taupō Sport Fishery.

An online survey that can be accessed at about the future of the fishery, is the first chance for the wider community to get involved in the trout fishery in and around Lake Taupō.

Everyone who takes part in the survey will go in a draw to win one of two amazing fishing weekends for two, provided by some well-known local fishing lodges.

Tongariro Lodge and Turangi Bridge Motel have provided weekend accommodation packages as prizes for the survey draw. Hunting and Fishing Taupō have donated a number of gift vouchers, and there will also be some weekend fishing licences given away as well.

The Department of Conservation’s Taupō –nui-a-Tia Area Manager Dave Lumley says the release of the online survey is the first step in engaging with the fishing and associated communities, as well as those people who do not currently fish to get involved.

“These prizes will not only serve to showcase some of our local fishing lodges and the experience and facilities that they offer, but they could also hook some new fishers to the local area,” says Dave. “For a few minutes of your time you could win a fantastic weekend away.”

“We have already had interest in participating in the project from as far afield as New South Wales in Australia and numerous inquiries from anglers and tourism providers locally and from  around the country,” says Dave. “This highlights the importance of the fishery to the Taupō region and also further afield.”

The project shows the department recognises the need to build on what is already there, and look at new and innovative ways to grow and expand the fishery so it becomes an even more integral element of the Taupō region, says Dave..

Further information on the project, the terms of reference, and how you can be involved can be found on or by emailing
