Stainless Damascus knife for forum member
Sep 25th, 2012 at 10:27pm
Print Post
I was approached by a forum member to make him a hunting knife. He wanted it made in Damascus, so I got hold of some stainless damascus and got to work. I made the mosaic pins from aluminium and brass and the bolster from 304 stainless. The wood is African Leadwood. The sheath is my standard fitted and hand stitched leather that I supply with my hunting knives. The new owner will hopefully get to use it soon on a hunt - I am sure he will give us some feedback on how it works.

Its hard to believe but it actually looks better in real life than it does in the pictures. Needless to say, I'm rapt!!!!

I will take this opportunity to say that if you are considering having a custom knife made, you will find it impossible to go past Ludwigs mastery of the craft, and just as importantly, his customer service. If ever the phrase "under promised and over delivered" applied to anyone it would be Ludwig.

Depending how the rest of the week pans out I might get the opportunity to carve something up with it this weekend........if I can find something to shoot. Fingers crossed.

I am glad you like the knife - good luck on getting an animal - my knives are not meant to sit at home.

I am also the proud owner of a pair of Ludwigs.

Last year I also got a knife each for a couple of close mates for Xmas.

If you ever just have one knife, make it a Ludwig special.

Thanks for the recommendations guys.

Mr Swodem, I have made quite a few knives over the years, but you are the person (other than my father and wife) who ordered the highest amount of knives for a single person, thanks for the support!

This particular one is RWL34 and PMC27, both steels are high carbon stainless. The bar I used for this one is a
random pattern twist, so the layers are forged together twisted, forged flat, relayered and twisted etc. After I sanded and polished the blade, I etched it with HCL acid, the RWL34 stays bright and the PMC27 turns grey. Without the etch treatment you can barely see the patterns.

That is a truly amazing piece of work and goes way beyond craft and solidly into art. And I can only imagine what a pleasure it would be to own and use something like that.

Love the look of the Damascus stainless!!

Love the shape of that blade, a drop point is a practical hunting knife and the leather work is something to be proud of. Outstanding. How did you get Combretum in NZ. Have you ever tried wild olive, or sneeze wood would they do? Cool

Thanks for all the compliments guys. Doug, I got the wood from my father's farm in SA - cut it into scales and brought it in my suitcase on my last visit. I have not tried wild olive or sneezewood, I actually planned on getting some sneezewood imported with a few other things (knife making supplies in NZ is not readily available)

How the hell are you going to get any feed back. That knife will, if the owner has any brains ,be locked up in a bank vault. It is outstanding ,easily 500DS. Cheesy

What you want to do is make belt buckles. The yanks would kill to get your creations. Imagine you on Rodeo Drive in Hollywood with those silicon boosted hotties . Grin

Silicon boosted hotties sounds great, but getting people to buy into the handmade idea is a bit harder than it sounds. Big factories these days produce quality goods - it is only a small part of the market that wants something more than bang for the buck. So the handful of us NZ makers will forge ahead.

Yes, I used a plate of damascus, cut the profile and ground it all from scratch. However, I do not forge steel, I use the stock removal process.

Thanks. I use a very low viscosity epoxy that I coloured black. I then attach the outer tube to a syringe and draw the epoxy into the tube.
