Old Buy and Sell Section
Feb 11th, 2012 at 2:47am
Print Post
This post is not intended to be negative...

It is coming up 4 months since the old "buy and sell section" was closed off, to encourage users to make the switch the new "FishnHunt 4sale" site.  I made the switch  in the hope that it would take off, but lets face it, with only 4 auctions, 8 wanted ads and only around 4 guys on-line looking at it, it really seems that it has not taken off at all.  Many of us have just resorted to Trade Me, which is a shame as generally guys would be offering up their unwanted gear at lower prices here on the forum before resorting to Trade Me.

I am keen to see the old "Buy and Sell section" unlocked and carried on as before (maybe with different rules added to its use eg no linking to trade me ect)

Just mine and a few other members thought that's all.

Not negative, just factual. Alan it's your ship, but the new buy-sell-swap  does not seem to be a "goer" to me either.  Embarrassed

Yep I agree.

I gave it a fair go but it just not happening,.

I'm not going to waste any more time with it.

Now is a good time to put it out of it's misery.

The bring buy sell forum worked well for me and plenty of others here.

Maybe its time to run a poll and see what the members really think.

Personally I think its time to accept that the new format is dead in the water , and move on to something useable again.

I agree 100% with above comments.

The new selling site was worth a try, but simply doesn't work. I put one item on there and it attracted zero attention - would not do another.

On the other hand the old buy sell system was very hunter friendly. All sorts of stuff was put up, often with good offers for site members before it went on trademe. Its a service I miss on the site now.

Let's bring it back Alan, and at the same time look at alternative ideas as to how this site can pay for itself - as it must. Could we have a thread here to offer/discuss new ideas?

Maybe the buy sell section should revert back to the free method but only available to those who have donated to the forum.

My suggestion still stands that the Buy Sell section could be moved to the Donor section.
Make a small donation to use it. Obviously not going to net the same return as if the new buy sell site had taken off - but better than nothing

The old buy and sell section was one of my most visited parts of this forum.
Since the new site launch, due to their being very few listings, products available and member support, I have only ever glanced back at it since.  Even now it doesn't appear to have increased in popularity.
I would love to see the old section used again and would be more than happy to have to pay some sort of donation to have that privilege again.
Just my 2.5 cents anyway.

I think the BUY/SELL/SWAP section was under utilised by the forum sponsors. Instead of relying on us to click through to their site, if they had a daily/weekly/till all sold specials etc that would be a cool thing.

bring back the old thread. If we're paying TM fee's we can at least afford $10 membership and sell on here.
I bought stuff from here because I wasn't going to get a duck and sold stuff because it was a fair price.

I look on this forum out of interest for all sorts of things that interest me to do with hunting and fishing.
To go to another site and learn how to navigate, sign on, buy , sell pay other fees just doesnt interest me.
The old buy, sell, swap just suited me to have a quick peruse while on here. I have had a look at the new site but really if you are serious about searching for an item to buy through the net, its quicker / simpler to search ebay or TM.
If it returned here I would be happy to pay a % buyers / sellers fee

The new section is as dysfunctional as the Christchurch CBD.

I have added all the ads to it to ad blocker so I no longer see any mention of it.

I don't really care of the old section is brought back.  If this site doesn't want the traffic then it will go to other sites, the new forum, gunstuff, trade me or whatever.  If this forum doesn't want that traffic then the others will gladly have it.

I also vote against putting it in the donor section as less people look at it = less bu yers which is the problem with the new section.

I no longer intend to donate as I have in the past as the recent discussions proved that this site should pay for itself.

Why?

Surely you have missed the point.

As Massive said eailer "If this site doesn't want the traffic then it will go to other sites".

I see a post that had a link to the new forum with a free buy/sell section got deleted and it also got removed from my previous post when I quoted it Sad

Ironically it was done by a moderator who is a member on the new forum.

So what rule did posting that link "break"???? The website in question does not sell anything!! However they do offer a buy and sell section the way it used to be.

Jealousy or fear perhaps? We are all grown ups aren't we?

Back with the old one i say. Its far tooo much of a mish opening up a seperate website when im already on one with a buy, sell, etc section.
Unless the whole forum gets behind it its a waste of time as you will never get the traffic through it.

If a concession is to be made I'd be happy with the old section coming back under the donor section. I'd guess Alan would get more money to cover costs by having more donor members. I'd imagine people wouldn't mind making a token once a year donation to have the service.

I'm in the process of selling my house and no doubt will have plenty of stuff to sell or give away soon. It would have made it onto the buy/sell section here had we had one. I'm not going to put it on the current one however in its new format as its too much hassle and no one appears to use it.

Just two weeks ago I threw out a large wheelie bin full of old Rod and Rifle, NZ Outdoor and NZ Guns and Hunting mags because I couldn't give them away. The other forum doesn't have many Southlanders on it so didn't bother there. If I could have I would have put them on here someone locally from here could've got them.

Time will tell if its a waste of time. Maybe something will come of it , maybe not.

But at least it gives you an opportunity to have your say. And since it is a privately owned forum , the ultimate decision rests with the owner , not the users - no matter what they think.

We can only hope that Allan takes heed of the poll results , and the comments from those who repond.

It will not get the traffic like it used to if it were to be locked away in the "donors" section, which defeats the purpose of bringing it back IMHO.  This would once again create an unhealthy us and them forum.  I do think that if the minimum "donation" was $10 that would make it far more appealing.

Why re-invent the wheel? No other hunting/fishing/outdoor forum that I belong to charges to list things for sale. Commercially its the foot traffic that pays the bills. Apart from a good ole shit fight or nude pics of Helen Clarke, nothing attracts punters better than a for sale section. Commercial forum sponsors should utilise the for sale section much more. In my opinion, Alan gave it a go. Results speak for themselves. Nek Minut

I agree Tone but thought I'd ask anyway just to gauge opinion. Bring back the free Buy/Sell section I say and look to another way to boost revenue.

I was just perving on yet another NZ owned and operated site and they have two columns of ads, one left and one right. Takes up the whole screen. (Not a hunting site)

They certainly have a huge mebership. The one post I was looking at had 10,000 plus replys..  Cheesy

How would you feel about that?

Its pointless getting all aggro and stamping your feet and throwing ya toys out of the cot over this.

The poll and this thread have  produced a result that is fairly obviously in favour of some kind of BST forum , but it is still up to Allan to make a call on what happens. Like the Mainland cheese ads say - good things take time , and this one isnt going to get changed in the next 5 minutes. Patience , and civility please.

And no - I have no commercial interest in this thread , other than being an occasional buyer/seller on the old forum page .

And no - I have no commercial interest in this thread , other than being an occasional buyer/seller on the old forum page .

good on you muzza, summed up well

I can not see any "aggro" at all on this thread.  The thread was intended to encourage some healthy debate/ideas on the issue.

Of the 105 people who to date have voted for the old buy and sell section to date, how many listed an item there and then posted a link to Trademe?

Just curious as Trademe is a far bigger audience than the fourm is when trying to sell stuff.

Putting it in the donor section is pointless.  Any for sale site needs lots of buyers to work and putting it in the donor section cuts out most of them.

Besides, Alan said he wasn't going discriminate against non donors.

And yes, I would be happy if there were more adds on the forum to help fund costs.  Advertising is the cost of things being free.  If you don't want to look at them then just add them to add blocker.

Good to see that the logo has changed to recognize  wildharvest's contribution.

Not long ago Alan almost came close to shutting down the forum after he caught a member organizing the sale of some H&K semis on here which mounted up to a lot of dollars worth of firearms being imported for members on here and without the  consent of the site owner or the offer of some sort of commission for using this site to sell them even though an apology got made the damage was done.

Not long after that happened Alan put up the auction page and started charging success fees for it. Basically it came down to the privilege of using this site for selling of items for no charge was abused and Alan had to put his foot down because of it and the end result was user pays.

Now I do not post much on here because I like to keep to myself but I do observe what is going on and since the introduction of FnH for sale site people have been getting upset over it but look back on that attempted group buy for those H&K semis on here and think about how you would have felt if someone did that to you with no permission or offer of some sort of compensation for the use of the site to conduct that sale.

This is the thread I was talking about http://www.fishnhunt.co.nz/forum/YaBB.cgi?num=1319575985/0

That thread was allowed to go on for 7 pages...
The very first entry was specific about the intent. It could have been closed down straight away by the mods or Alan. But wasn't.

The damage to this forum has been done, Its created a split were some of the long standing members that have put alot into this forum with events, advice and generally helping people out.  It will never be back to how it was, the damage is done and if Allen has asked here before he made the change all this could of been avoided it.  Allen didnt bother to ask what the users of this site thought of his idea and this is the end result.  Well done Allen, hope it was worth it $$ wise.

Just for the record, when Alan indicated how much the forum was costing him to run a number of people suggested that members could make donations in order to help out financially and also suggested that he introduce a fee for selling items in the Buy Sell forum. Alan resisted the latter for at least a couple of years.

Alan did not initiate either of these measures of his own accord.

And whilst it is nice to see you back again rabbiter it was not the introduction of donor members and the new Buy Sell that led you to leave the forum. You left long before the latter for entirely different reasons so why are you back now just to put the knife in?  Huh

That was a firearms thread and a very generous offer to only this forum. If someone offers a bunch of 10/22's at a wholesale price folk would be all over it. I wonder, what generous things you've done for the forum at your own expense? have you donated?

I don't see the big issue. there's been a thousand threads degenerate into name calling and abuse. That must be expected when you put a large group of individuals together. If it's about money then make it only usuable to donators and no commercial stuff. if it's not about money making then i don't see the problem. two choices....sort it and leave the buysell.....don't sort it and remove for good.

The advertising banners on the side are only $300+GSt for an entire year, thats $6 a week! Am I reading that right? Thats too cheap if so.

Be better off charging the commercial users more and bringing back a free buy/sell section.

Yeah, that is crazy cheap for targeted advertising! My expectation was that the little ones on the left would be at least $100 per month. Meaning they should very easily fund all the running costs of the forum.

I guess it comes down to what value the advertisers are getting from placing their adverts here, or in simple terms, what return they are getting.  Their's plenty of forum members who use ad blockers inside their browsers and dont even see them. Lips Sealed

Not sure that applause from that gent is worth a lot here in NZ , but it is good to see the forum back again.

Obviously the members opinions were listened to , and now its up to us members to make it work in accordance with the rules.
