Fish and game are proposing that overseas anglers pay 3x a licence fee to fish here.... but it proberly wont catch the Australian anglers... or the Chinese boat anglers on the lakes.. just the ardent fly fisherman.
Id say double would be more reasonable for a season licence for non residents. Are they looking at increaseing the non resident 24 hour license too? That would be a good idea or the 7 day angler would just go for the $23 for 24 hour options x 7.
I don't support a licence increase for visiting anglers. That is no way to treat a guest.

I think it is a good idea, for three main reasons.
Firstly, it isn't about treating guests badly - it is more about treating the locals better.
Secondly, this sort of idea makes sense economically. People who live here are going to buy a licence EVERY year, for many years. People who visit are less sensitive to price changes and are more likely to pay without quibble. They are also more likely to fish intensively throughout their visit, so will get good value from a licence, even at a higher price.
Thirdly, it puts a real value on the resource. This is the sort of thing that makes politicians and tour operators take notice and (hopefully) would strengthen the argument towards cleaning up the waterways and making fishing in NZ a bigger selling point overseas. Years ago, NZs fishing was actively marketed overseas. These days it is more things like Lord of the Rings, bungy jumping and skiing.
Put fishing on the map, fund it, make the users pay (while not disadvantaging the locals) and the quality of the resource would should actually improve for everyone.
There's a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an id10t. (Steven Wright)

But then overseas anglers purchase a seasons license and often only stay two weeks... on that basis they are already paying way more than locals pay for 12 months!
I'm sorry if I offended you when I called you stupid! I honestly thought you already knew!
$121 for a whole season. Can't buy two week licences. At the moment you'll still pay the same as us. Its looking to be only 10% more in the future for non residents.

I think it is fair, knowing that the dedicated angler visiting NZ will most probably be fishing heavily during his/her stay in your country. Let's say 5 fishing days over a 14 days trip...It's only 24$ a day to fish in NZ.And fishing in the salt is free...
Considering the tremendous fishing opportunities and the quality of the fishing experience available in your country,I think it is very reasonable, even for the budget-minded DIY fisherman(no outfitter, no guide,etc...).
