Hi, Thanks heaps for all the input in this thread! easy to follow instructions and great results  Cool

what would be the best underlying topomap package to use in conjunction with the google earth images?
(just replaced my 60csx with a 62s after a bunch of my gear was stolen and now need to buy a new topomap set) have tried the openGS maps and they are sweet but the shading does detract from the google earth images.

would my mates oregon 300 support the google map images too?

thanks!

I don't know which is the "best" underlying topo map but MapToaster and the now out of date GT Topo map work fine.

Yes, your custom map will work on any Oregon or other compatible Garmin GPS units - info and list here: http://www.garmin.com/us/products/onthetrail/custommaps.

I couldn't get this to work unfortunately Lips Sealed, it wouldn't download the tiles, keeps on saying 'one or more errors have occured'. Part of the map involved the Clutha River so I tryed it with only land but no go. Also my 400c doesn't have a 'Custom Maps' folder. Does this matter? Also does anybody know any other good ways to get maps onto gps if this doesn't work?

Cheers

Hmm, Strange, It should still work. If you like I can give it a whirl for you.
Open Google Earth, add a placemark (drawing pin icon up the top), give it a name etc, then right click on it and save it as test.kmz, then e-mail me the kmz file (PM with e-mail addy to follow). Tell me how large an area you want and I'll see if it works for me.

Edit: +1 for Map Toaster (cheers Tony)

Thanks for the info, esp Kersh and Kiwitonita, I reckon this type of thing is the huge upside of the forum, some of the trolls in other threads give me the stitch, but this is what it should be about.  Have printed off the instructions and will give it a go.  If I was a bit younger and not so lazy I'd have a go at seeing if there is demand to create custom maps for people, at $10/map or similar.  Maybe a copyright issue?  I'd pay it as my brain gets pretty sore trying to relearn it every 6 months.

Hi there Smiley

Since a few weeks I'm getting the following error with Trialmap:

Code
Select All
Invalid Credentials.Sign up for a developers account at: Http://microsoft.com/maps/developer

Worked fine before. Any idea how to fix this one?

Cheers,
JaSa

Hey just bought a Rino and have been researching how to get google earth images on. I guess the first step are maps.  I'd appreciate advice on a good map. Do I need to buy map toaster type maps or are the downloaded maps via Linz ok these days?

I prefer the LiNZ maps to all the vector options. Guess its just what you're used to.
They will eat your batteries a bit quicker, but I'd rather carry spares and have a clear map to read.  Roll Eyes

Thet are getting better with each update.

Free LINZ Topo50 Garmin mapsets - raster vs vector.

All credit to LINZ and Mr.Purple.

So GoogleTrail seems to be broken since quite a while, is there a working solution for this at the moment ?
