What was your issue with google?, was it the missing tile problem? or just out of date imagery? I have found that sometimes with the missing tiles error, you can simply make two differnt halves of the map you want, then load them both on to your unit. Also try zooming out a little. If you're looking at an area that has new imagery, with old imagery down one side, try and trim your draw area so that it only includes tha new imagery bits.  Cheers.

Edit: Hey HG, you can improve the picture buy zooming in more before you click 'Set Zoom Level'. What zoom level did your map come on at (on the 62s). I've got a couple that come on at 200m zoom, you can see individual trees in a pine forest (ahem) Sambar block.

Issue was the particular area i had selected wouldnt zoom , so when i went in it didnt load so was unclear , when i changed it to bing , it zoomed in straight away , so could go in and out as per usual with any other programme. The picture is clear i got a good sized area into the kmz. Smiley

Just a note the picture is still more black than green , think its something to do with gpsmap62s more than anything , but this way will get you the clearist image , I have a programme that you can edit the jpegs that form the file , to set the colours correctly for the unit , so will have a play with that tommorrow.

HG, can you take screenshots? On the Oregon, you go to Setup -> Display Setup, then enable screen capture (or something like that..), then when you give the power button a quick press it takes a screenshot and stores it in a \SCRn directory on the unit. Does that work on 62s ?

p.s. Your google problem is because they haven't taken full high resolution images of the whole of New Zealand. Bing can certainly be better in places

Heres a few screen shots , The darkness is to do with the unit not the pictures. Coz they arent this colour on the unit .

They look good HG. As you say the limitation must be the unit itself. Try This:
Browse in Trailmap to your area with google or bing, then switch to 'Open Street' -> 'Normal' (LH Side), then on the right side, click 'Overlays' -> 'Bing as Overlay'. Hit the '+' sign next to it (you should get a slider bar below), move the slider to the left to reduce the image intensity to your required level. Then carry on with the 'Draw Area' etc etc.

Edit: The tiny black down arrow next to the slider is to select satelite, normal etc

I've downloaded Trailmap had a good play with this and my 62s and I like it.

The images are brighter on the 62s than the Mobile Atlas KMZ's although I did have to turn the screen brightness up to maximum which means shorter battery life. Just have to remember to turn it back down after each viewing.

The tiles were heaps less too. The area I selected, a Ruahine stream system, ended up being only 4 tiles. which is plenty area for a good days hunting for this fat boy.

Based on my trial today I believe I will use the image option overlaid with my topomaps more often now.

Thanks for the post and the effort to you put in to write up all the instructions. Made it easy for me.

Cheers

Morning Folks,
@ James:
Mate i think it'll run on Mac's but only on Windows running on a virtual machine within the Mac OS.
http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/overview.html
or Google 'Running Windows on a Mac'

@P38:
My pleasure mate, just here to help and learn some stuff myself  Smiley
I was pretty impressed with it too. It looks great on the Oregon, Gonna have to get myself one!
I think we'll be using it more too, Once you've done one It's pretty easy eh.
Did you notice that you can overlay multiple map images with the overlays box (top right in Trailmap). Enjoy!

@ Pengy: That's a bummer mate. PM me the area you'd like to play with if you like and I'll make a KMZ for you. Got any hunting buddies with PC's you can borrow?

Thanks very much for this very helpful tutorial.  At long last I've made a custom map - just the city area for a start for practice but was far too greedy and ended up with over 5,000 images.  Now I'm looking into part the Rimutaka Forest Park area for a customer.  Using Trailmap, Bing shows excellent detail in under 2-3 seconds.

However when I switch to Google the satellite map is very course indeed and takes much longer to display.  Trying to get a better quality image by zooming in as close as Bing results in a blurry mess with no detail.  If I switch back to Bing it's a great image apart from some cloud in one area - which is why I was trying Google.

In Google Maps the area is shown quickly in high detail but not in Trailmap. Same on the other computer, both XP with Firefox.   I noticed when doing the Christchurch area the other day that Google was very sluggish in displaying maps.  Thought it may have been because both areas had a fair bit of sea but not so, inland areas are the same.  Any tips on the reason for this slow / course behaviour with Google satellite view in Trailmap?

Thanks again for the lesson - it was excellent so I told another new 62s owner.  Two hours later he phoned back very pleased with his new high detail aerial map of a friends farm and surrounding area.

Ok, too greedy again and got nearly 3,000 jpegs which resulted in 2 .kml files.  That's not so bad but my query is - when I view them in GE the individual tiles are not tidily together, instead they are spread out like a crossword.  Is there a setting to get around this and make the jpegs bunch up or is the only answer to just select smaller areas at step 5?

Hi Tony,
I've had a similar experience with Google inside trailmap, It appears to be a bit random in it's clarity, a map that looks crap on my work PC will sometimes render sharp as at home.
I do know that google have recently added 'Historic imagery' to Google Earth, and Trailmap seemed to run sweet as before this addition. I believe (although it's a guess) that Trailmap is picking up the hostoric imagery, not the latest images, so I guess we'll have to wait until the author rewrites that bit to include a date slider ala Goolge Earth (In GE click 'View' -> 'Historical Imagery'. You'll then get a date slider near the top left, you will probably find that the most recent imagery is not neccessarily the best. I think this is where Trailmap is losing it's way. As for the crossworded jpgs?..... I'm not too sure what you mean?  If you save you're KML files otu and then load lots of them into Google Earth, Google will forever try and display your KML file (not it's own imagery), which may give you that effect (I think). However, you can just uncheck them from the tree on the left (in GE, under 'Temporary Places'), and it will again display Googles own imagery.

Hope that helps? If not PM me your number and I'll give you a buzz tonight.

Cheers
Kersh

Thanks - I think you're right, Google is using old images.

Here's a screen shot to show what happened when I had too many tiles and the downloader made 2 KML files, resulting in the "crossword" layout of all the individual tiles, instead of bunched together.

and here's one where I fluked 99 tiles which are nicely bunched together, red border drawn in afterwards for clarity:

The resulting kmz Custom Map (62MB) seriously slows down GPS start-up time on the eTrex 20.

I used the 200m scale on the TrailMap programme and the custom map came on in the GPS at the 300m scale.

I found that the Open Project Topo map did not suit this custom map at all as it laid it's own vegetation over the map as well as the contours.  So I've asked if the OP topo map is available with just the contours for use with custom maps.

MapToaster Topo definitely behaves better on this custom map as the vegetation does not obscure but contours remain OK.  Screen shots from a 78s (same screen and software as a 62s):

The above kmz file (inside the red border) is stored here in my Dropbox here in case it's of use to others.
