How To: Add Google Earth Images to Garmin Oregon/Montana 4 FREE

Hi Guys,
I've been playing with a fella from works Garmin Oregon 550, and It's a bloody neat bit of kit. We had a need to mark a whole bunch of clearings from a Google Earth map as waypoints to 'visit' and figured the easiest way was just to copy the whole picture to the unit and then cruise from one to another.

That lead to this tutorial.

Don't pay for 'Birdseye' imagery when you cen just do it this way  Wink  FOR FREE
Read the Attached PDF for full instructions.

Enjoy!

Now with all that money you've saved you can send me some  Smiley

PDF Instructions:http://tinyurl.com/44czwlw

Example Map http://tinyurl.com/3ssrubs

Note: this map wasn't created at a very good zoom level, So it comes on at around 1200m (zoom Level), and the quality is not that flash when you zoom right in.

If you load this example onto your unit, you'll find it here:

Cheers
Kersh

I'd like to know too.

All my attempts to load google earth images have resulted in very dark (almost unusable) images overlaid on the topo maps.  Sad

Sorry Guys, I don't have access to a 62 to try it on, but itf you download the attached trial kmz file, you can just stick it on your device in the CustomMaps directory and try it out yourselves. If your unit can display custom maps I'd say YES it will work.

Actually, Can someone with a 62 please try the example map I loaded and let me know if it works, If it's OK i'll change the thread title.  Cheers

Edit: According to the web site, it should work on both the 62 & 62s

Thanks T-Rex. That's a whole lot easier than File Factory! I've updated the links in the original post and chopped out all the FF blurb.   Smiley

Any chance of some screen shots from the 62s.
Did you find the images dark?

Cheers

What was your issue with google?, was it the missing tile problem? or just out of date imagery? I have found that sometimes with the missing tiles error, you can simply make two differnt halves of the map you want, then load them both on to your unit. Also try zooming out a little. If you're looking at an area that has new imagery, with old imagery down one side, try and trim your draw area so that it only includes tha new imagery bits.  Cheers.

Edit: Hey HG, you can improve the picture buy zooming in more before you click 'Set Zoom Level'. What zoom level did your map come on at (on the 62s). I've got a couple that come on at 200m zoom, you can see individual trees in a pine forest (ahem) Sambar block.

I have tried several times and several downloads of Trailmap, but I cannot get it to launch for step 4.
Keeps putting up a message telling me that Trailmap has encountered a problem and has to close.
Any suggestions ?  Embarrassed

Buy a new computer  Grin

Do you have a broadband connection? I had a similar error at work, but it seems to have fixed itself? I think it was a firewall issue at work. If you're running Win7 or Vista, try right clicking on the icon and click 'Run as administrator'. Failing that try turning off your virus scanner, then run it (bit of a long shot, but might work). If it's stopping at the black DOS window with an error, it may be struggling to find your 'Internet Explorer' are you running IE or Chrome / Firefox etc...? I'll have a troll and see what i can find. What's the wording of the error exactly.

Edit: Lol, I upgraded to IE9 last night, and now I've got an error too. Haa Ha.
It is the same error i got at work

If you get this error, you Internet Explorer will probably be flashing a note saying Intranet disabled, just click 'Turn on Intranet settings', you'll get a warning pop-up, blaa blaa, click OK. Then TrailMap should run....I think

I usually find them a little dark but doing it the way as explained above seemed to be a bit lighter and alot easier to see slips and things on

@Pengy:
Try the above first (I've updated the post). Failing that, Trailmaps runs on Microsoft Silverlight, so depending on how old your PC is, you may need to install Silverlight first.

Try that and let me know how you get on.
Huh
