Have not tried it and assume the signal may not be good enough outside regular coverage.

Very interested how it works for you though.

I started feeling old. Then picked up hunting. Now I just feel sore most of the time. Slowly getting younger though.

Hi Sikakila,

How did the Android GPS tracking work for you?

Well!! I will be trying the gps tracking in a couple of weeks in the scrub, but from what I've learnt so far,the gps/tomtom/garmin-type thingy for getting you from one town to another chews up your data (mb) bigtime..even when having the gps function switched on.NOT happy about that, makes it uneconomical and expensive to run,I will do more research on this. Also I will find out if the gps is 'high sensitivity'..and this point I think it is NOT,therefore will be useless under the canopy...watch this space bro  Angry

That is a known issue, unfortunately. It is also a lot more greedy on battery life than dedicated GPS units.

Apparently the next release of the android Custom Maps app will be able to support the free Garmin Custom Maps (kmz file format) made freely available for download from NZ Topo Map (topomap.co.nz).

I've used the Custom Maps app myself offline in the bush myself with GPS and thought it was handy, if a little basic in functionality.

I would post some useful links but I've not posted enough for the forums to allow me to do that yet Wink

have back country navigator on a samsung galaxy s2 and its great.  Hard on the battery if you use it all the time but as a backup to my map its all i need.  Compared it to a Garmin in a story i wrote that will hopefully get published.   If you need a GPS think seriously about a smartphone

I'm running BCN on a Galaxy S2 as well, It's pretty awesome. Full compass, save your tracks, etc etc, just like a dedicated GPS, Only has two issues i can see.
1. It's not waterproof, so not ideal when it's pissing with rain.
2. It does gobble battery, but if you start a track recording, then turn it off, it'll still record your track with the program (mostly) closed.

Also remember to turn off packet data & Wifi to get a bit more battery life.

I've got a complete atlas (map) of the North Island LiNZ Topo Map at all zoom levels (6-15) if anyone wants a copy (PM Me).

With backcountry navigator can you download the whole topo for NZ?  I have the app but I only seem able to download a selected section of the map.  I want to download the whole thing and then not be reliant on a data connection.

This is my rifle, there are many like it but this one is mine.  Without my rifle I am useless, without me it is useless.

Well, Sort of. As you say you can download a bit at a time inside BCN, or, Much easier, is to use Mobile Atlas Creator (MOBAC), this lets you generate atlases for BCN, and download much larger areas at multiple zoom levels, So you can zoom and pan all over. Hence I've done the complete NI in one Atlas. It wasn't quite that simple, but it's easy enough. I've been meaning to finish downloading the SI map too, so I'll look at finishing it this week (bandwidth permitting). The NI map was around 7Gb, so you need a fairly large memory card in you phone (I'm using 32GB Class 10 card with no problems).

Easier would be to send me a big flash drive or portable HDD, and I'll whack it on for you.  Wink

I have been using Orux Maps, it lets you cache or downloads maps beforehand...

Also does tracks, waypoints etc...

Got Viewranger in the end, with all the LINZ topo maps. Bloody brilliant, easy to use and the web interface is good also.

Just ordered a Driphone for my android to keep it dry for fly fishing / tramping. And going to get a second battery for the phone, only $25 online.

Also seen some chargers that will charge the phone from AA.

So really not much need for a separate GPS unit now. Mine's going on Trade Me.
