To all clubs, members, and supporters.

Update on the Exclusive Capture Campaign #1

The subcommittee of the NZFFA Executive met in Wellington on Saturday, January 15th, with representatives from both Islands present. It was a very successful and productive meeting, allowing much information and many ideas to be shared. A formidable series of action points were developed for subcommittee members to work on. They will be kept very busy! We will keep you informed about these as they are developed and implemented.

In the meantime, as indicated in our latest newsletter, you can help keep the pressure on by writing or talking to your local media and your local MP about your concerns on the issue. Take some points from our press releases, from our newsletter or from our website, and put them in your own words. It doesn’t have to be long or involved, a couple of paragraphs are plenty. Write to your local paper or MP, John Keys or Kate Wilkinson, or go and see your local MP and talk to them about it. Although this is likely to be a long campaign, and more specific points will emerge later, starting this now is vitally important and extremely helpful to us.

Some of you will be aware that there have been responses from several quarters on our initial Press Release. These include statements from the Walking Access Minister (David Carter), from Federated Farmers, an interesting segment on Hawkes Bay Radio, and an opinion piece in the Herald on Sunday. While the Federation will respond to these, your own responses as individuals and clubs will greatly assist us in getting our message through.

Remember the parts of that message. As responsible and ethical anglers:
•      We absolutely respect the private property rights of all landowners.
•      We endorse and abide by the Walking Access Commission code of ethical conduct.
•      We are implacably opposed to any arrangement where commercial operators have access to public fisheries that ordinary licence holders don’t also have.

Remember too, that while we already have a list of instances where we think this is occurring, we want to hear from any angler who also knows situations where they think the exclusive capture of fisheries happens. Please tell us!

Tight Lines!
