Are these leaks anything to be concerned with?  They seem to be slowly getting worse.  Cheers Nick

LOL I was thinking of asking about my 2.4 - it's started hemorrhaging oil out the mainseal on the front of the round thing (or thereabouts)

It just got a warrant - the cheeky bugger told me it was "rust proofing"  Roll Eyes

Nick,

try giving your engine a steam clean and then take it for a decent run to dry it out good. Then try to see where the oil leaks are coming from. The oil that is coming out the front of your diff head is a concern. you need a new seal in there, cos if the oil can get out, that means that water and other crap can get in ...

my advice on the diff pinion seal is that if your not sure of what your doing then don't attempt a repair yourself if you get it wrong you'll ether have the diff flange to loose or to tight which will eiter way result in damage to the pinion or the pinion bearings (eventually)
you'll have to water blast the engine down as trg42 has mentioned but it would appear to be tappet cover gasket and possibly front camseal orcamseal housing gasket where it bolts to the head . these use to leak ages ago but i haven't seen any for a while since they have gone to a steel shim type gasket.
see how you go pm me if you want more info (toyota workshop foreman)

you really have to mark everything to reference point and tighten it back up to only just past where it was - i wouldn't use a torque wrench(personally)
more important to be lined up to where it came off from
ie: the flange to the pinion and the nut to the pinion and the flange!
if it gets tightened too much the pinion bearings will fail in no time!!
also you'll need to have a really good look at the sealing surface on the pinion-it may be scored...believe it or not the rubber seal can wear into the steel flange.if this is the case then a "speedie sleeve" or another flange will be required.

the oil leak at mtr could be cam or crank seals leaking, sometimes cam/crank has wear mark where seal sits so might need a speedy sleeve fitted.get it fixed soon as oil will get on t/belt and cause big dramas
