m77 asked me to put up the following document received from his SAR secretary for other members who may be interested.
The original PDF document can be downloaded from Munster's Hunting Resources hosting site here for those who require a slightly larger and clearer image to print out.
Many thanks to m77 for supplying the information and munster for hosting it for us.
Dear Noah, We could have sworn you said the ark wasn't leaving till 5. Sincerely, Unicorns

I am using UTM/UPS units on my GPS( for programming especially). Is it something that you use also ?
Iam not very familiar with all the tweaks and vocabulary related to the beloved machines , but I'm definitely a "heavy" user... That's why I'm interested.
Or do I have to simply make adjustments once I reach NZ ?
Thank you and have a good night.
^..^

I have no idea, sorry. Hopefully someone else will be able to offer advice to help you with that one. Would suggest that you post in the Gear and Equipment forum rather than here, in order to attract more attention from those who know these things.

Hi Martin, if you already have an older map of where you are intending to go or someone in NZ has the older type (common numbering is the 260 Series) to lend you, you can still use them and use the old grid system. The position is still in the same place, it just has different references to remove any possible confusion.
Either way you will need to set your gps to the grid system of the maps you will be using and in NZ that is generally one of the 2 mentioned above for land based maps.
Our grid works from a datum point that is South and West of NZ and readings are expressed as a number of Metres North and East of that Datum point.
Its a bit like New Yorks numbered streets, easy!

I have a Silva GPS and the menu has map grids from all around the world in it. I am not familiar with the Etrex but suggest you refer to your manual and see if it has other map grids built in and if so just set it to ours to match the map you are going to use. When you get home you just reset it to your local system.
What Blackbunny said, put this in the Gear section as someone here will have an Etrex and know what to do. They are widely sold here too.

You need to check the number of zeros you have put in. If you can not get the right number of zeros for the False Northing (10000000.0), Try all 9's (9999999.9)
Other ones may require a 0 to start with in the false easting (01600000.0)
