How to set an ETREX for NZTM2000

Setting an Etrex for NZTM2000

If you setup your Etrex now then you will have the numbers saved and in September 2009 you can just select “User Grid” and “WGS84” and you will be good to go.

  • Turn the GPS on. You can do this inside as we don’t need to acquire satellites to change settings.
  • Press the Page button 4 times. This will bring up the “Menu” Screen.
  • Scroll down to “Setup”, Press Enter
  • Scroll down to “Units”, Press Enter
  • In “Position Frmt”, Select “User Grid”, Press Enter

In the window that comes up you can alter the Grid Reference settings. This changes where your grid starts.
  • Longitude Origin, Set to E173 00.000
  • Scale, Set to 0.9996000
  • False E, Set to 1600000.0
  • False N, Set to 10000000.0
  • Select “Save”

This will bring you out to the “Units” page.
  • Scroll down to “Map Datum”
  • Select “WGS84”

You are now able to use NZTM2000 Maps when they are issued in September 2009.

To use your current maps, Change “Position Frmt” to “New Zealand”. This will set the datum to “Geod Datum ‘49” Which is what we currently use.

Not a problem. I originally wrote it and it was published in the National Land Search And Rescue Newsletter.

so now when I'm using the new USR units I don't get any location details?

am I doing something wrong

Is the New Zealand TM Position format the same as the new USR one?

ok yes I can't read  ... all working now

is this the same as the New Zealand TM Position unit? or slightly different,  location looks pretty close

Just been reading up on this, NZDG49 = 260 series topo maps = old maps


WGS84 = new grid system and matches exactly the new maps= nztm 2000?

EDIT- found info, WGS is not exactly the same as nztm2000, but can manually enter settings into  csx60 to give it the exact settings.

It does, but from what I have read, it isnt the exact same grid as the new maps, which I need it to be for work. So I can enter in the settings manually.

NZTM is the Grid, WGS84 is the Datum.

The 2 go hand in hand. Selecting NZTM should also automatically select WGS84 as the Datum.

Does that match exactly with nztd2000 ( i think that is the correct term) of the new maps. I was under the impression there was an approx 200m difference.
