Great picture Mike--thanks for sharing that. Cheers.
Thanks for your efforts Rupert James and your teapot. I apreciated the comments about the trout being hard fighting best fishing I have ever had was Ruakituri I am sure those trout are turbo charged P addicts they go like stink EH! Two biggest trout I have caught were there matching 9lb rainbows on the same day I got 15 fish that day over 6lb and only stopped fishing because I was knackered. I haven't made it above the falls yet but someday I will .

Gidday Baz. My father was born and raised up the Ruakituri before a move to Matawai. His father was on a soldier settlement block I believe (but I might be wrong). If my memory serves I remember stories from my childhood about how his grandfather took several trout eggs and possibly, though unlikely, fingerlings from the river in a kerosene tin to such places as Tutira and the lower Mohaka, again I might be wrong. I grew up in the Mohaka area and I have fond memories of trips up the Ruakituri as a kid. It's where my love for the outdoors took hold. I remember catching an eel under the falls as a kid, it was huge and released to create memories for others. Several deer were not so lucky. I have been handed down an old Long Tom that was apparently used for shooting scrub bulls on the back of Waimaha. It isn't in working condition. I live in Australia now and I cannot wait to return to that special part of the world with my little outdoorsman, a two year old named after the God of the Forest. Thank you for sharing a wonderful story. I will be certain to share it with my father.

Just checked with Dad, his Grandfather was the manager at Papuni for 30 odd years apparently and helped release trout from a hatchery in Greenmeadows near Napier into the lower Ruakituri......... apparently.

That's interesting Ruralmedic--So your grandfather had a hand in releasing trout-awesome. His efforts have left a great legacy for us anglers. The Ruakituri and the upper Hangaroa are 2 of my favourite rivers. Thanks for that interesting bit of history. Cheers.
I have seldom been so drawn into a story, I felt every bump along the way - thoroughly captivating. And thank you to the man who posted that picture - it is as beautiful a place as I have seen.
I have never been in that place, yet that name rang a bell and there in my notebook of places to go to is the 'Ruakituri' - and why it is there I have now forgotten.
Thank you for bumping that story - I would have been unlikely to have seen it otherwise.
Strangely, I read another post this week that tugged a heart string - and that was one by 'Tararua Hunter' of his walk into the headwaters of the - and I've forgotten the name of the bloody river. That was another place I wanted to go, just to look, and again - that was a place I never got to.
