This thread is for the posting of Huts, Bivvies & Shelters on the top half of the North Island of New Zealand. Structures in this thread should be located North of Hawera - Hwy 43 to Taumarunui - Turangi - Taupo - Tarawera - Napier.Hut postings should include The name/location of the hut, Grid Reference/GPS waypoint coordinates, a few minor basic details about the hut itself such as bunks, heating, accessories and if possible a brief description on the means and times to get to it. This is not a forum of discussion about the hut/s but is merely here for a reference to that hut. Further discussions about the huts can be posted in the in the main section of the Huts section. Any postings that turn this thread into a discussion and detract of the nature and intent of this thread will be either deleted or moved. Historical Huts are welcome but please indicate their availabilty for useage. So feel free to add to this thread.
Te Torara hut located in the Parahaki / Waiau River system, Southern Urewera.
Located at NZMG reference V18, 6267700 mN, 2846500mE. This is the first hut in the above valley. To get to this hut you have two options, the first is by contacting Richard White at Ruatahuna, 07 3663941 who will drive you through Whites clearing or you can walk from the State Highway by arrangement with Richard. Having walked into the clearing many times when younger, I would highly recommend using the service that Richard provides plus he provides security for your vehicle.
Travelling times, from the road end to the end of Whites clearing and the start of the Parahaki Stream, 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
From Whites clearing to what is known as Bald Knob or to use the correct name, Upokoatihi clearing, 1 1/2 hours.
From Bald Knob to the turn off to Te Totara is around 3/4 hour and it then 20 - 30 minutes to the hut itself. The walk down the valley is not difficult and it is quite easy to reduce the times mentioned above.
Please be aware that this area was hammered during the winter storms a couple of years back and as such some of the high level tracks as shown on V18 have not been cleared.
The hut itself is built from split Totara in the 50,s for deer control. It is a six bunk hut with an open fire and the standard NZFS bench.
