In the last few weeks my line of cage traps baited with half a dead stoat have been going gang busters catching more stoats. Ducks are nesting and the wee buggers have suddenly turned up everywhere

Saw my first stoat in Auckland today running across the road on scenic drive 2 mins from my house, too quick for me to take evasive action! My tree set victors have been pretty slow on rats this spring, despite kilos of bait being eaten at the base of the same trees.
Any tips on tuning my victor traps to stoat mode? I have a couple of boxes that I have never caught a rat in hence the treee sets.
Was thinking of trying the ping pong ball set up.

Stoats are big on smell and as such i just struggle with ping pong balls which are visual only i would guess. I would be using eggs or a meat based lure like Erayz.
went and checked my traps the other day...first time for months...literally.... 4 staots 1 weasel 1 hedgehog and two rats..... pingpong balls and eggs do work. Im not out everyweek like I was as the area I have traps in has been rabbit fenced...stuff all rabbits for food so the ferrits have not come back...what Im getting now has lizards or nesting birds to choose from. agreed on how to set them, any cover is better than no cover.

Need to bring this thread up again, its gold. Thanks to Cruz for showing me how to find it as i had lost it.
My local rat traps are being cleaned out of bait by mice almost overnight... grrr . Mustelids have dried up a bit. High country traps are still catching stoats and weasels but it will slow down any day now and i will go to 1x a month checking.

One lure that is really working for me is feathers. The ducks that i shoot all get plucked and the feathers put in a plastic bag . From there they get placed in the trap end of the Doc traps, they cover the treadle nicely but the smell is stoat / weasel candy. they look awful if they get wet and need replacing but they work well.

Good to get it going again Salmoner - great to review all the information that Chris put up years ago We have spent five years trying to catch stoats around the Quarry Park with very little success - but in the last few months we are tripping up some young ones in our Snap-e rat traps - sometimes in mesh front boxes and also in open core flute tunnels - peanut butter and possum paste pulls them in - they also come to a site where a rat was killed - rat pee is a strong lure Ironically - I built nine new doc200 boxes to target hogs and stoats - but to date just getting hogs - but that is fine I have also got a couple of ferrets recently in doc250s - Mum and then the young one came back Yesterday I got a kitten in a Snap-e - then 50m up the track another kitten in a doc250 I am having good success with leaving rats on top of or beside the traps - also putting legs of ferrets and ferret skin in all the doc200/250 traps - it is a long lasting lure for all comers Also getting plenty of animals around the street - backyard trapping with PFBOP - 90 odd in six months - from ferrets to mice - including a weasel in the Victor Pro So the only way to trap these predators is to have plenty of traps and check them regularly

i live on 2.5ha block in Tawa, wellington. have been catching plenty of rats this year. was away from home for most of january and part of febuary so our 3 cats went to a cattery. so the population grew with no control and traps not being checked.from when we came home till end of march caught over 50 rats. then in april got another 36, so far this month have got 19. mainly using victor traps (10) and 1 doc 200 and 1 good nature24. bait i am using is peanut butter and the GN chocolate lure.
