Yeah i've shot it a bit but not since its had the new stock which should only increase the accuracy. Ive tried a few different projectiles but have now settled on Hornady SST 150g. I will give the new berger 150g VLD's a try when i can get my hands on some just to see how they go also.

Well you were getting the 140gr AB's to 3200 weren't you misty?

that's good for 1,000Ftlbs out to around 850 yards I think.

6.5-284 wouldn't do much better than the .270 with a 150SST or berger VLD I think if you look at the numbers Lips Sealed

Unless you use a 140gr berger VLD in the 6.5

These have been on the forum before but..... Smiley

My long range bunny buster, a Tikka M595 Continental varminter, chambered in .22-243 winchester, suppressed.  Scope is a VX3 6.5-20 x 40

The rifle I used on the last long range shoot, A Weatherby Vanguard Sporter, bedded, floated and a trigger job, now suppressed and chambered in .338 win mag.  Scope is a Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24 x 50 (yes, it was up central shooting rabbits)

The latest long range rifle.  Based on a parkerhale target action, match trigger, 28 inch Shilen 1:8 twist match barrel, gunworks twin port muzzle brake, targex stock and chambered in .264 win mag.  Scope is a Bushnell elite 4200 6-24 x 40.  Weighing in a just over 18lbs and with a muzzle size of 28mm its not a mountain rifle.

I like them, with side focus it makes the scope nice and compact and the 4200's are good

Year having the parallax adjustment on the scope bell is just a pain in the arse, especially if
you spend time in the bushy stuff

Misty, is that a Shawn Carlock adjustable cheek piece/comb or did you source it elsewhere or even make it your self? How do you find it? does it stay put once set? is it comfortable?

Yep thats right Battson...
Its very comfortable and just the right shape. It can be adjuted up and down a fair way and id say it'd take a lot to move it once the screws are tight.

I put a Shawn Carlock adjustable cheekpiece on my Sendero, it makes all the difference and allows a good cheek weld which is hard to get with any scope much over 40mm objective.

Accuracy International AICS 1.5
Going to have a  Rem 700 Tactical in 308 fitted for now.. once I've run the barrel out on that, will rebarrel in 260.
Thinking on another one in LA, 300WM or RUM possibly.. depends on how much I blow on Optics lol  Grin

This is the latest for me, a bit of payback for the long hours I am doing at the moment Grin

It is in 300WM at the moment but the reamer has been ordered to take it to 300RUM Cool If they had a 300RUM in stock I would have grabbed it but reaming it I will get a chamber that suits the dies better and throat length to suit the pills I will shoot Cheesy Trigger was better than expected and easier to lighten than I was led to beleave, even has a half bolt from factory (no need to mod this one)

Nice looking action to, The stock is good and firm to with its ali block. I will use it in 300WM untill the reamer arrives then it will get its ream & brake Wink

the scope is the 4.5-14 grand slam with 30 thou of tilt to give me 36 moa of adjustment up, I can give it 10 more thou if needed but will try that to start with. I may change the scope later but it is a good start Wink The brake is going to be fitted by HRE & it is supposed to be a muffled brake, It's supposed to be a bit quieter than without it and of corse reduce recoil Cheesy I thought about a can but its already long enough and the brake is ment to be very lite.

I am looking forward to getting that done Smiley

Awesome rifle for the money I reckon. Very accurate, last trip out took about 10 rabbits in a row from 10 shots between 250m and 330m, using handloads with 40gr vmax's. Nice compact action and awesome trigger, either set or unset (especially since I readjusted it recently). Not too heavy and stock is very stiff (not having the problems the guys are having with the walnut stocks). Supressor is a great addition, three of the rabbits above were sitting in a group at 255m, and each remaining rabbit sat there wondering what had happened to its mate(s) until it met the same fate... Hi CLAW, that new rifle sounds like it will be very similar to mine. Id like to have a go with it when its finished just to see what it shoots like and see what the recoil is like...
A heads up might be to go and get a picatinny type rail for it and mount that nightforce scope in some nightforce rings as I have done. I initally didnt sdo that and insted brought some optilock rings with bases but they are nowhere near as good and + you might want an extra 20moa of adjustment that you can get from the rail.
Best of luck with it.... and very important to remember that Tony is very good but good things take time!

hmmm, I have ordered Optilocks and bases... Might see if that can be changed. No worries re having a shot. I am down Gore way, but would be keen for a Tahr (or similar) trip at some stage once I have the rifle figured out (and my fitness...). I'm sure we could arrange something so you could get a shot. With the supressor, recoil should be pretty light.

Yeah definitly when its finished if you want to go Tahr hunting something can be arranged no problem. Yeah I just thought id mention it as those optilock rings and bases arnt the best when you put a heavy scope in them.. With mine the rings came loose from the base twice and in the end i resorted to superglue... ended up a waste of $270 or so. The nightforce rings - whilst expensive - are really strong and very light. It can just be hard to get the rail although im pretty sure theres a couple of places in the USA that make them now... at the time they only made them for short actions.
Rod Woods in Loburn - North Canterbury machined mine from a blank of that really strong aircraft grade alloy so he could be good to ask.... by all accounts his finished job looked a bit rough but it seems to be very true!

Just needs a bit of that wood cleaned up, a few holes cut it the tip of the barrel for a muzzle brake and a scope welded on top is all

Bloody weirdo's on youtube jesus, all arguing that 1000 yards is the longest shot attempted by open sights.
I don't know where they get that from............ .303 Longtom Was used at 1000yds for target shooting, .308 is still used at 1000yrds for target with open sights.
Ahh the mystery of people believing they are experts because they posses a phone line and a computer.

Cool Cool I am form firing 243AI at the moment with 70gr Targex, lighter load with 38gr 2206H, but getting under 3/8th" centres Cheesy. Not going to drop many that far away but still good  fun. Mine is 1-10 twist so 90gr is it for me.

Nice rig you have there. have you done any load work on lighter pills??

Not as yet - i thought that i would start with the bigger pills and work my way down. I have got 105's in a-max and bergers plus 107 SMK to try. I will give the old favorite 87 v-max a go as well - they are pretty good in my 6mm-284 Cheesy

YEAP , its a very nice rifle , and was last produced in 1989 , the stock is made by McMillan , the colours are actually mixed/smeared into the fibreglass resin , when they where made , they donot make them like this any more , the stock is called the McHale by McMillan .

They are very hard to find and much sort after .

Here's my new investment for long range shooting, an Antonio Zoli AZ 1900 Black Magic in .308 win It's got a 24 inch barrel on it trigger is very nice and crisp still waiting to hear back from zoli on rate of twist so i can start sussing out what load i will make up as i cant find it any where on the internet.
Yes i Know i dont have a scope on it yet but I'm still trying to figure out what scope to put on it. As it has 30mm rings and to buy new 1' mounts is going to set me back $650!! so i thought i will save up a bit more to get a better scope than my VXIII (just not to tell the wife how much i want to spend i suppose)

You can get different base styles other than what is on it if you want - those look to be pretty high?
If you want to find your twist rate, put a tight fitting patch on you jag, mark your cleaning rod, and push down the barrel until the mark is back at the top again, mark it again, and then measure the distance between the two marks. I.E if it is 10 inches between the marks you have a one rotation in ten twist Cheesy

It is indeed some thing a little different to stand out of the crowd. Now I just need to make some loads up for it. I was thinking of some berger 168grainers but dont know what they go like on deer any body used them? and are they any good? or i was going to get some 168grain sierra match and start off from there..

reason for base colour,i shoot at the tops kaweka&kaimanawas which is tussock country and it tends to blend in nicely but was my first camo project, mistakes made and learned, cheeckpad is homemade copied from blackhawk(there is an original on tm as we speak)scope is a schmidt&bender pm2 5-25x56il with a p4 fine plex in ffp,"leathel" thanks for your help with the picture,i still havent got it sussed.longest shoot taken on sika was 569 yards and killed with 140gr.accubonds but would not take it any further with that caliber Wink Winkbut am looking to build up something larger on a 30 or 338 lm platform, its pretty windy up on the tops.

Nice going on the paint job Bobby. It takes a brave man to take to his rifle with a spray can for the first time.

yes i thought of that, the t3 only comes in magnum actions all they change is the mags, barrels&bolt release shroud and i be in buisiness, but rather have it as back up gun as it shoots 0.486"at a 100,rather just get something bigger for those extra long shoots, ben knows what i am talking about.

Izhmash Dragunov Tigr chambered for 7.62x54r.  Isn't exactly a long 'long' range piece and it's not a pinnacle of precision engineering, but it's an entertaining firearm to shoot.  Honestly, it wouldn't be near as effective at distance as some of the firearms shown here but it has shot moa at 200 meters.  I know its appearances aren't exactly pc, but as far as I'm concerned responsible firearm owners should be permitted to own any firearm, automatic, military etc for their enjoyment.  Note, I imported the scope and got a hefty discount on the rifle or I'd have to say both tend to be overpriced particularly attachments.  I did some research on Russian firearm retailers and found a site selling them for the Russian currency equivalent of $1500 US so I got a particularly good deal.

How does it go mate?? I know the Viet Kong gave the Yanks a curry up with those things in Vietnam.
Reckon they used to shoot accurately at 1000m. And that was before handheld laser rangefinders were around. Shocked Shocked Shocked

The Dragunov functions completely reliably and goes quite well.  It isn't built to be a 100 meter hair splitter and was designed to be used by the squad marksman out to 600 meters rather than 'sniper' units.  Ammo is its main limitation with factory ammo for 7.62x54r being far from match quality.  It can certainly be used out to 1000 meters using the markings on the scope reticle.  Accuracy at that range isn't going to be too flash.  With the Russian sniper ammo moa accuracy can be expected.  I've shot moa with 203 grain Barnaul which is not what the weapon was designed for.

The lower left of the reticle shows a graph used to estimate distance.  A target 1.5 meters tall or .5 meters tall is fitted into the graph and the number on the upper curve indicates their distance and the appropriate chevron to be used when shooting.

Target shown at 200 meters, just under 50mm spread, target underneath is 100 yards also within moa.

The Georgians pack Dragunovs too as do all those eastern block nations.  I saw a picture on wikipedia when I was researching the situation of a Georgian marksman setting up a shot with one.

DO you handload? It could go quite well. Ideal for something thats just fun and interesting to shoot.

It definitely makes a massive deep boom, probably enhanced by 'echoe' hills surrounding my shooting area.  If you're not behind the gun it's enough to make you jump; you can feel the shockwave in your stomach.  Had a friend shoot it, first time I'd heard it from another angle, and wow, it sure wakens you up!

I haven’t hand loaded before but it would be the way to go to really judge accuracy.  I'm fairly recent to the larger calibre.

when the weather fines up a bit I'll finish off a comprehensive video I'm making of the dragunov for youtube - disassembly, internals etc.  I have some Highland, Barnaul commercial ammo and Hungarian mil surplus to put through it so it should be interesting.

As far as shooting fun is to be had, I recon there isn't anything more fun to shoot in the whole of NZ.  I'm warning you though, once you get the dragunov hankering it consumes you until you get one, well that's what happened to me at least.

This is my set up-Pretty standard Browning A-Bolt in 270
I had the trigger done
And have an older mate who is brilliant at handloading, that has sorted me out with speer 130 softnose rounds that shoot really well, so I dont think I will do much else to the rifle.
I did have crown rings on it-Just recently put these Weavers on, and they are much much much better.
VXI Leupold, and a Harris Bipod (thanks Majk)

And this was the test rounds at 100 meters. They are doing 3000 (bloody close clocked at 2970)

The Weaver ones are OK as long as you don't mind putzing about with the scope trying to get it vertical.  Its a  minority of rings that can stand the recoil on most rifles.  Stick to Weaver, Leupold, Sako etc. for rings you'll never touch again.

It was quite a rig ma role to get the scope right, you arnt wrong-But I did it at the gun shop, and made sure it was perfect-took over half an hour-but anyways, now its on-I dont think it will be coming off. Accuracy has improved alot, and after a trip before the next when I check it-I dont need to change the sights (how it should be). I rate the weavers higher than the Leupold too, But ultimately the sako rings is what I wanted, but the Browning came with weaver bases-so weavers it was!

I have them on my 308, when it got reblued Nelson Colie (Status guns) said they are real bad for squashing the scopes to egg shapes as they pull down on one side only.  Mine are ok but there are better around thats for sure.

My weaver rings were too wide, I couldn't mount my scope properly on the long 700 action Huh Also a real pain in the ass to get the scope straight with them, for sure.

so far they're doing ok on the 10/22

This is the first time I have herd a bad thing about weaver rings! Maybe I havent spent enough time on here???
I had Leupolds on my old BSA 308 and they moved a couple of times on me (Now that could have been me being younger and rougher on gear) So I thought I would try these, and although I havent had them long I cant fault them.

What I mean , is IT is designed to be used as a Military piece of kit , ie strong & tuff & stuff , the scope is the USO MST-100 , that you have already seen on this action , un painted .

Course Knob Cammed in yds 1-10 , which is 100-1000 yds, with a fine tune elevation tab/knob thats plus or minus 3 moa total either way , in 1/2 moa clicks .

Windage is 1/2 moa clicks , with 8 moa L or R , none of the knobs can turn past the stops , ie they donot go past 1 turn , so you can never be OUT a turn , as on multiple turn scope knobs .

Fixed 10x  , 40mm objective , has a front parallex adjustment , is 1 inche tube , and Steel scope , which after being so use to Alloy scopes , feels heavy and cold in your hands .

So,  Cool factor and not having to remove the cheekpiece to get the bolt out... makes good sense. I would like to have a play with an AICS

Down side is the extra cost & weight , about 1/2 lb in weight , makes cleaning with rod a little easier , but is handy to pack away , in car etc ,

The etxra cost on a AI AW to AWF ( folder ) is only about 300 NZD , and I think its worht that and then some , especially IF you ever have to sell IT .

I'm afraid I have never met Steve. Army Air Corps is made up of 6 Regiments so its quite easy not to meet every one.

My long range rig. Still a work in progress but not much more to do. Built it as a 600m carry around kind of rifle so not ultra long range.
Sako Finnbear 3 lug action (2 in front of action 1 in rear)
Heym 24" Barrel light contour Mag Na Ported 300 Winchester Magnum
Borden/Rimrock Synthetic Stock
Bushnell Elite 4200 2.5-10x40
All up weight is 7lb14oz
Had a significant amount of muzzle lift so had it Mag Na Ported and that keeps it down well
Still working on developing a load with 185 Scenars getting it down to about 1" and 250yds on the weekend so showing promise

Well - thought its about time I become properly involved in this thread: my AI .308

Edit:Spec's:
  • Remington 700 Short Action
  • Hand-lapped 20" C.M. Rem. Tact. barrel chambered in .308
  • X-mark Pro Trigger at 1.5lbs
  • AICS stage 1.5 with 5 and 10 round mags
  • Harris LM-S bipod
  • Ken Farrel 20moa Steel Picatinny Rail
  • Leapers Heavy 30mm Rings
  • Millett TRS-1, 4-16x56 IR with Mildot-bar reticle

    To be added:
  • After-market bolt handle
  • Low profile rings

Broke the thread on the rings attaching them to the rail for the first time (due to pre-existing damage)
      Angry
So the replacement pair are higher than I would have liked - but they'll get changed after the new ones arrive in country. The adjustable cheek piece has a purpose to serve until then!

I am quite chuffed about this project, cant wait to start claming some tahr at 500m plus!   Cheesy
