NZ'z largest rock-clinger. Dark brown to black, sizing from about #14 std to #8 std at maturity.
Heavy thorax with prominent plating over. Prominent up-standing fixed grey gills which absorb oxygen direct from flow. Three tail feelers; small antennae.
Swims clumsily, with heavy jerking of the body, usually head down.
