OK.
First of all. The 44-40 is not as powerful as the 44mag, and some of the older rifles chambered for it dont handle higher pressures too well.But they are very nice little Rifles.
The 44mag shoots a bit flatter and hits alittle harder and ammunition is more readily available. Some people would even say that it is more accurate as well.

What kind of hunting will you be doing? what kind of Terrain and Game?
