I use a Lowrance Global nav 212. It works in NZ grid references as well as the Lats & Longs for coastal charts. I have found it to be very useful for getting a handle on where I am but it wont always give a fix if there is heavy timber such as tawa forest blocking the line of sight to the satelites. Garmin also produce a GPS which I have tried yet it seems to be slower at getting a fix and wont always get fixes in spots where the 212 gets a fix. I always take a compass and map and just use the GPS to confirm that I am where I hope I am. Very hany if you've been out all day and are not to sure where you are at 4 or 5 pm which is good time to be hunting and not rushing around like a bloody idiot trying to locate the camp.
