Yes, I use a GPS (a Magellan Trailblazer). I have found that if you turn it on and get a lock before you go "undercover", it seems to keep track of the satellites OK. What I do is just turn it on every now and then, when I come across a clearing. You don't need much of a gap in the canopy (just one fallen tree), especially if you are on a ridge. The GPS doesn't seem to mind manuka and scrub, but large trees cause havoc. I've found mine quite useful, but it is debateable whether the cost was worth it (though they are now a lot cheaper than when I got mine. It's great for fishing though!!
